The Bobby Rock Newsletter #20 (8-12-2021) - Your Gold Medal Moment
Hey Gang -
It’s a travel day today and I am buzzing around through various airports. Delta lounges, and ground trans vehicles, tightening up this Newsletter for your perusal. I play Sturgis with Lita Ford again tomorrow (our fourth time in eight years.) It’s universally recognized as the largest motorcycle rally in the world. Last time we played it was three years ago. I will never forget walking onto the stage, stepping behind the drums, and seeing this view on that warm, clear, gorgeous summer night: Anyway… always a great time at Sturgis. These folks love their hard rock! In this issue:
_______________ Your Gold Medal Moment With the 2020 Games now behind us, I have an interesting contemplation for you today. I have always been fascinated with the Olympics… with this idea that an athlete would give an enormous amount of time and energy to a singular cause, enduring unprecedented levels of sacrifice and suffering—particularly in a four-year stretch—all to (hopefully) wind up at the top of a podium with a gold medal around their neck. At the same time, the fundamental risk/reward mechanism of this journey used to strike me as untenable: Simply not worth the once-every-four-years shot. Too many variables involved… too much at stake… too much out of your control with regard to that outcome… even as hallowed a moment as it might be. (Of course, this “risk/reward mechanism” is also what makes the games so riveting to watch!) But then, during the 2004 Olympics, a greater revelation struck me: You don’t work all those years just so you can stand on the podium and bask in the magnitude of the achievement; you do it for who you will have to become to be able to stand on that podium. Such a journey, I believe, is about self-actualization—becoming your best self. And it is precisely in the becoming of this highest expression of oneself that makes the journey worthwhile… medal or no medal, and no matter where you wind up in the standings. Which leads us to today's mind-expanding reflection: What is YOUR gold medal moment? What singular moment in time might represent the grandest culmination of your best, most consistent work, coupled with that extraordinary set of skills and attributes that you have developed over many years? A few considerations:
So… one more time: What is Your Gold Medal Moment? And perhaps more importantly... Are you currently on your way to it? _______________ Don’t Stop! The Mental Benefits of Finishing the Uninspired Workout While we tend to view working out as something we do exclusively for the conditioning of the body, it is also of tremendous benefit to the mind. When we are engaged in a vigorous workout, we need to enlist that mental fortitude to focus and push through those various pain zones. In this way, we are developing both body and mind. Some days, you jump into a workout and you’re just not in the greatest headspace… not feeling very inspired. You might feel a little tired or sluggish. The body is still trying to acclimate to the idea of training and… well… you start thinking about cutting the session short. I get it. But don’t! If you hang in there and finish, one of two things will happen: 1. Sooner than later, the blood will keep pumping, the muscles and joints will loosen up, the "brain juice" (endorphins) will start surging, and you will start feeling better. This is the most likely result. From there, you will be able to finish your workout as planned, often noticing that you caught a “second wind” and it was a decent workout after all. 2. You just never really catch the vibe, so you have to rely entirely on your mind to push the body and grind it out… which becomes more of a workout for your mind than your body. In other words, while it might turn out to be somewhat of a half-assed session for the body, you take advantage of engaging the mind in an even greater way than usual. This is how you “callous” the mind (as ultra-runner and all-around bad-ass David Goggins describes it). So the next time you’re ready to bail out early on that session… stay with it, and let the mind do the “heavy lifting.” _______________ Down & Dirty! Earlier in 2021, I launched my very own custom-blend superfood powder called Dragon Dirt. In this section, we offer tips and insights for our kick-ass new DD community. Our Ingredient Spotlight provides info into the why, what, and how much of our ingredients in the Dirt. Meet Cordyceps... one of my all-time favorite superfoods: Cordyceps mushroom is a centuries-old medicinal elixir with origins in exclusive mountain regions of China, Tibet, and Nepal. Its healing properties are legendary, as it bolsters kidney, lung, and sexual function, as well as overall immunity. “Cordy” is also a renowned athletic performance enhancer, cranking up cellular bio-energy (ATP) and optimizing oxygen capacity for increased energy levels and endurance. Today, painstaking harvesting methods enable us to include only the organic fruiting bodies in our blend (unlike many other brands), which retain the maximum amount of its coveted attributes. There is a full 600 mgs of cordyceps in a single serving of Dragon Dirt. Find out about all 18 ingredients at www.drinkthedirt.com _______________
